Big Brother Loves Number PlatesJune 2006 will see the biggest step forward in vehicle licensing technology since number plates were first used in 1903. The new Automatic Number Plate Recognition system links 43 police forces in England and Wales to a computer network that will be able to tell officers if a vehicle it taxed, insured, stolen or has been involved in a crime in as little as four seconds.
The new number plate recognition system will be fitted to static CCTV systems and mobile vans each of which will be able to monitor up to an estimated 3600 number plates per hour. Once the system has identified a suspect vehicle local police are alerted and guided to the vehicles location. Regional trials of the new system have seen a dramatic increase in arrest and conviction rates and the national roll out is expected to revolutionise traffic policing in the UK.
Civil liberties organisations have expressed concerns over reports that the number plate recognition system will store details of every number plate viewed by the cameras and the date and location of the vehicle for up to two years.
