No More Dirty Number PlatesThe AA Motoring Trust has drawn attention to the difficulty automatic number plate recognition systems have in reading muddy and incorrectly spaced number plates. In the past police officers have often ignored mud, minor spacing errors and incorrect typefaces on number plates, but with the advent of the new national Automatic Number Plate Recognition system those days are numbered.
The new number plate recognition system will be linked into many existing police and council CCTV systems and will automatically alert police to any infringements. The pilot project for the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system resulted in police stopping over 180,000 vehicles.
Inspector Alan Brown of North Wales Police said “If the size, type and spacing of the lettering on the vehicle number plate are not in accordance with traffic legislation, then our ANPR computer will be triggered and officers will stop the vehicle”.
